November Is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month

Stomach cancer has become the second leading cause of deaths in the United States. It is usually caused by genetic factors, acid reflux disease, obesity, stomach polyps, smoking, infection, anemia, excessive use of alcohol and contaminated food. The disease usually strikes adults between the ages of 20-40 years old and has a five year survival rate. A diagnosis of stomach cancer is usually confirmed through lab tests, computerized tomography scan and x-rays. There is also a gene test which may determine one's risk of developing stomach cancer.
